Audi has been on a tear lately, releasing new models at dizzying speed.
Now that they are preparing to launch an up-dated version of their A4 for
the 2009 model year, what should we expect?
The New A4 will debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 2008, but it is generally agreed that the 2008 A5 coupe is the best barometer of what the new A4 will look like. For the new A4 Audi engineers lengthening the wheelbase six inches allowing a 2 inches wider stance and adding 5 inches to the overall length, which will make the A4 the largest car in it's class. A new, more stylish interior puts the MMI system into the center console and integrates the Ipod interface, 6 CD changer and Bluetooth more fully than in the current car.
You will also notice a new climate control panel with knobs replacing the buttons as in the TT and A5.
Look for the LED daylight running lights and a more aggressive front end to make the car look sportier than ever. The rear tail lights are changed slightly (for the better) and the side profile adds a subtle, sensuous flare at the rocker panel. The Audi engineers did their homework and came up with a body that's lighter and stronger than the previous model.
The inside appointments have been completely redesigned and one gets an immediate sense that this is a big step up from the current A4. Seating position is excellent as it always is in an Audi, with plenty of room for drivers who may also play in the NBA. Gone is the old floating center arm rest. Now it is anchored at the rear of the console and slides fore and aft. Good riddance to the annoying need to level the armrest with that stupid button.
While the interior is larger, the driver seems to be more enveloped by the intertior and the seats gain in comfort as well. The instrument cluster is a dream, with a double teardrop design very similar of the R8 and S6 layouts.
There is a bell housing version of the DSG transmission in the works that should find it's way to showrooms in the 2009 A4 at some point. This alone would make the A4 a class leader IMHO. The 3.2 liter version will get a bump in horsepower to 265, and if the A5 is any indication, it will be a dream, pulling a 6.2 0-62 time with the manual transmission. Rumor has it that the 2.0 liter engine will also get a redo which should be interesting. Also look for the B&O sound system. Another significant change for 2009 will be dramatic modifications to the Quattro system which will give the car a 40/60 torque split improving traction.
Audi is trying to keep a lid on the new A4 hoping to avoid a slowdown of sales for the current model. We'll have to wait and see how that goes. I can say however that presently (March 08) the Audi buying public is not generally aware of the new A4 and in fact many present A4 buyers are still considering the present model as "new". But for the real Audi entusiast many questions remain: Will the Q5 replace the Avant? What about the just redesigned Cabriolet? Will the new RS4 be a coupe? Is the price going to go up? Only time will tell.
